HAARLEM, Netherlands – The NJCAA Baseball All-Star team dropped its fourth straight contest at the 2010 Haarlem Honkbal Tournament 12-4 Thursday night to the Netherlands. It was the second straight loss to the Dutch team, who defeated the United States 4-1 on Monday. The NJCAA All-Stars are now 1-4 at the tourney and will face Cuba Friday at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. Eastern).
The win improved the Netherlands squad to 5-0 in the tournament. The Dutch team has been very strong on the mound, surrendering just five runs (all to the United States) in 45 innings of play. The Dutch roster for Honkbal Week is likely to be the same roster the Netherlands will use in qualifying for the next Baseball World Cup and World Baseball Classic.
Andrew Morris (Gulf Coast CC, Fla.) took the loss for the NJCAA All-Stars. The future Auburn Tiger surrendered three earned runs in four innings of work. He walked three and struck out three. The Netherlands offense picked up eight runs off USA relief pitchers Chuck Ghysels (Lincoln Trail College, Ill.) and Chandler Jagodzinski (Lake Sumter CC, Fla.) in the later part of the contest.
USA’s two runs in the sixth inning was developed by Tyler Hall (Grand Rapids CC, Mich) who led off the inning with a single, which was followed up by a double to left field by Marty Gantt (Spartanburg Methodist College, S.C.). NJCAA Division II Player of the Year Raph Rhymes (LSU – Eunice, La.) then singled to score Hall. Gantt was then driven home by Anthony Bemboom (Iowa Western CC) who reached on a fielder’s choice. With one out and runners on first and third base, the USA rally ended when Bemboom was thrown out trying to steal third base and A.J. Regolli flied out to right field.
The additional two USA runs came in the eighth when James Brooks (Cochise College, Ariz.) came off the bench and singled to lead off the inning, which was followed by a single by Hall. Gantt then flied out to deep right filed to advance Brooks to third base. After Hall stole second base, Rhymes drew a walk to load the bases. A passed ball allowed Brooks to score. The bases were then loaded after Bemboom reached first base on a walk. Regoli then singled home Hall to make the scored 12-4. The inning ended when Wade Hinkle (Cochise College, Ariz.) grounded into a double play.
Hall and Gant both had two hits apiece in the losing effort while Brooks, Rhymes and Regoli had the remaining three hits for the United States.
The NJCAA All-Stars face Cuba tomorrow at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. Eastern). Cuba defeated the USA team on July 11 by a score of 7-4.
